Trunyan Village : putting dead body under the Trunyan trees

Trunyan is located on the eastern shore of Lake Batur in Bangli Regency. Trunyan is a traditional Bali Aga Village that can be reached by boat from the lakefront in Kedisan or you can charter a boat from Toyo Bungkah and make sure the price is clearly understood before departing, and that the entrance donation to the Trunyan villagers is included.

There is also a road around the southern edge of the lake through the villages of Kedisan, Buahan and on to the tiny settlement of Abang then continue onward through small road to Trunyan. Trunyan offers views of Mount Batur from the eastern shore of the lake. This provides a very different perspective from the usual view from the crater rim.
Another attraction is the cemetery. Ancient customs retained by the Bali Aga here include putting dead body simply under the Trunyan trees. No cremation, no burial, just let the earth change the dead body to be it should be and the soft fragrant Truyan tree surprisingly sweep away the bad smell of the dead body.

Trunyan also has some interesting culture such as Batara Datonta and Barong Brutuk. Batara Datonta is a naked sacred statue, 4 meters in height. This statue which is considered as stone-age relic has a vivid carving especially on the face.

The right hand is flexed on the axe above its shoulder, Datonta’s penis dangles downward in which a hole-a symbol of vagina is there below the penis. It is believed to symbolize Lingga-Yoni or a symbol of Adam-Eve is the vital part in human life. While Barong Brutuk is a masked dance that is performed on temple’s anniversary. The dancers wear frightening mask and clothes made from banana leaves.
